- INSIDE SPORTFISHING BAJA 6: COCK-A-DOODLE BLUES
Whenever anyone asks me, of all the places we’ve filmed, where is the best fishing? Without a moment’s hesitation, I tell them the East Cape. For over 15 years we’ve been coming down here, and even with all the increased pressure, the fishing along this stretch of the peninsula just keeps getting better. Due in no small part to the Van Warmer Family’s policy of practicing CPR for all billfish caught from their resorts. Catch, Photograph and Release is becoming a way of life along Baja, and the benefits can be seen on almost every trip. In addition to the outstanding offshore fishing, including the blue marlin highlighted in Cock-A-Doodle Blues, the inshore fishing along the endless white sands beaches south of Hotel Punta Colorada, are without doubt, the best in the world for hunting roosters. Punta Colorada isn’t known as the Roosterfish Capital of the World for nothing. So join us as we venture off the beach for the blues, and one of the most amazing releases ever filmed, before working the inshore waters for roosters topping the 50-pound mark.

And if you’re ready to push the envelope, jump into one of the resorts kayaks for a little extreme marlin fishing, yak style. When you’re fishing here, there are No Bad Days.

L01-20-011海釣大魚樂趣與技巧-EL NINO INVASION
- INSIDE SPORTFISHING: EL NINO INVASION
Occasionally in the tropical mid-Pacific, deep oceanic up-swellings, currents and high atmospheric jet streams converge, creating an extremely large body of warm equatorial water. When this body of water is of great enough mass and gets pushed hard enough, for long enough, it hits the continent, splits and starts running parallel with the coasts. Moving northward, up the Central Americas, Mexico and, in rare years, all the way up the California coast. Known as El Niño, this phenomenon brings drastic weather changes that affect the entire planet. But in Southern California, the only thing anglers really care about is that it brings with it some of the best fishing we’ll ever see. Join us as the boats running out of Dana Wharf Sportfishing take full advantage of the incredible yellowfin tuna, yellowtail, calico and barracuda bite. Acclaimed as the best local Southern California fishing film ever shot, this DVD will thrill the entire family with non-stop action and beautiful underwater photography.

L01-20-028海釣大魚樂趣與技巧-THRESHER SHARKS YAK STYLE
- INSIDE SPORTFISHING: THRESHER SHARKS YAK STYLE
Of all the places we’ve ever been, and of all the programs we’ve produced over the years, without question, this is one of the all time classics. Having been invited by a group of locals to fish threshers off the beach in Malibu, from their kayaks, I had no idea what to expect. What happened out there on the water was incomprehensible, as these guys went head to head with fish topping the 200 pound mark. Working from platforms that put them only a few inches off the water, this glimpse into their world is going to leave you shaking your head in disbelief. It takes a tough, unique individual to even think about fishing threshers from a yak. It isn’t for everyone, but for the few, it’s an experience that will last a lifetime. But as hard core as these guys are, what impressed me the most was the camaraderie, and the way they worked together, helping one another whenever someone got bit. Their energy reminded me of what it was like surfing in the early 60’s, when just being out there was enough. This was as close to a oneness with the sport that I’ve ever experienced.

L01-20-042海釣大魚樂趣與技巧-SAN CLEMENTE ISLAND – GOES OFF
- INSIDE SPORTFISHING: SAN CLEMENTE ISLAND – GOES OFF
For years we’ve been pitching balls into the boiler rocks and along the kelps at San Clemente Island and have had some pretty good days. But nothing we’d ever seen could have prepared us for what the island had in store for us. Legal calicos are plentiful. But the big ones, those huge home guard fish pushing 10 pounds, are few and far between. Smart, elusive, and territorial, these explosive, hard-hitting fish spend their lives buried dep within the kelp or hunkered down between the boiler rocks. More often than not living along the backside of the islands, where weather and sea conditions often make their habitat virtually inaccessible. But every once in a while the sea opens up her mysteries, giving us just a glimpse into her world few have ever experienced. This is one of those rare moments when everything was perfect and the bass simply went off. Hosted by Dave Pfeiffer and Robby Gant, this was the best calico bite any of us had ever seen.

- INSIDE SPORTFISHING: GIANT STURGEON
Sturgeon are the most underrated fish we’ve ever had the opportunity to pursue. Prior to our trip, we’d been told fishing for them was like “”””pulling on a wet blanket.”””” Those reports couldn’t have been further from the truth. These Columbia River giant white sturgeon pulled as hard as any fish we’ve ever seen. Granted, they don’t fight like the exotics with screaming initial runs or massive aerial displays, but they do put on a show and they definitely put a hurt to you. We had two rods explode under the incredible pressure these giants put on the gear. All you can do is hold on and go wherever they take you. We also joined Brad Cady at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and Dr. Molly Webb of the Oregon State University Department of Fisheries and Wildlife to observe some of the studies they were conducting on these oversize white sturgeon. The program they have in place with these fish has to rank as one of, if not the best, fisheries management programs in the world.

The bite was so good, we kept passing up tailers, in order to get on the feeders. Spectacular underwater footage of free-swimmers working bait balls, explosions on the kite baits, and non-stop action will have you replaying this one a few times.

An absolutely amazing look at how incredibly good the fishing was at this island, before it became a marine sanctuary. There is no fishing allowed at the island any longer, but back in the day it simply didn’t get any better than this…with 200 pound tuna boiling behind the boat on every piece of chum, around the clock for days, and wahoo going ballistic jumping over 30 feet in the air after the kite baits, this is as good as it gets.

L01-20-057海釣大魚樂趣與技巧-MIXED BAG – SHARKS & GAME FISH
- INSIDE SPORTFISHING: MIXED BAG – SHARKS & GAME FISH
The fish rich waters of the Southern California can be some of the most productive fishing in the world. An established breeding ground and nursery for both mako and thresher sharks, these waters are also home to a number of other hard fighting game fish. From yellowtail and white sea bass, to calicos, barracuda, bonito and halibutm both the inshore coastal and island, as well as the offshore fishing can be spectacular. It all depends upon the time of the year and how knowledgeable you are about the individual species. Join us as we team up with Keith Pow and David Brackman as we battle threshers, inside the Long Beach breakwater before heading toward mid channel for a shot at some big time makos. From there we move inland, to the Salton Sea to fish plastics with Barry Brightenberg and Rick Ozaki, throwing to some fresh water cousins of the white sea bass, the legendary corvina. These fish hit like a wahoo, jump like a dorado and fight like a tuna and with multiple hookups going off all day the action is non-stop. We wrap it all up with an incredible look back in time, circa 1954, and a 3/4 day trip aboard the Hurricane, running out of Pierpoint Landing that brought limits of albacore, bluefin tuna, bottom grabbers and broadbill swordfish that topped the scales at just under 500 pounds. Not too shabby for a 3/4 day run!
