Situated in the middle of the Tuscan countryside, Siena is the quintessential medieval city. During the Renaissance, artists including Duccio, Simone Martini and the brothers Pietro and Ambrogio Lorenzetti developed a style of painting that became known as the Sienese School, which made a significant departure from traditional principles associated with the Italian Renaissance. Siena is home to the Duomo di Siena, one of the oldest Gothic churches in Italy. In addition to the sumptuous fa蓷de and interiors, the church houses works of art by Donatello, Bernini, Michelangelo, and Nicola Pisano, among others. The Palazzo Pubblico is a civil building, whose construction started in the 13th century and was completed in the 14th. The crown was designed by painter Lippo memmi and the building houses a large collection of frescoes, the most famous of which is a three-panel series by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.

Venice is our destination in this program. One of the most iconic features of Venice is it’s Grand Canal, the central waterway, and highway, of the city, lined with over a hundred palaces spanning five centuries of architecture. Another famous landmark, the Piazza San Marco, also is home to the Palazzo Ducale, or Doge’s Palace. Not only a masterpiece of Venetian Gothic architecture and the heart of political, judicial and administrative life during its time, it is now a museum where visitors can view the duke’s apartments, as well as the armory and prison. Ca’ Rezzonico is an 18th century museum, a former palace filled with paintings by Longhi, Canaletto, and Tiepolo, as well as fine furnishings. The most complete collection of Renaissance paintings in Venice may be found at the Gallerie dell’Accademia, where masterpieces by Titian, Tintoretto, Bellini, Giorgione, Veronese, da Vinci and more are on display. Scuola Grande di San Rocco is an ornate 16th century art museum dedicated to the works of the dramatic Renaissance artist Tintoretto. Finally, the Galleria Giorgio Franchetti alla Ca’ d’Oro features antiquities as well as art by Titian and van Dyck in its ornate, 15th century palace.
