We explore the new sources of clean energy that could power our future. First up, we look at a new bio-fuel, biobutanol, that could replace petrol and diesel, and it all comes from another essential liquid, at least for the Scots – whiskey. The byproducts of the whiskey distillation process are combined with a few other chemicals and a clear fluid is produced – biobutanol – which can be used by a car or truck or plane straight away, unlike ethanol. The scientist behind the approach has revitalized a technology, first used in World War II fighter planes, to help fight an ever greater enemy, climate change. We then explore how hydrogen is shaping up to be the power source of the future.
