Do you have a secret that no one else knows? What about Apple, Google, Facebook, Verizon, or Uber? Are you sure they don’t know your secret? Digital data mails, text messages, phone records, location markers, web searches ontain traces of almost every secret. They also contain traces of almost every crime. Tech companies may promise to protect people’s data from prying eyes, but should that promise yield to law enforcement and national security? The U.S. Constitution doesn’t contain the word “privacy,” but the Fourth Amendment guarantees people’s “right to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures.” Does new technology threaten this right?
